The Constant Companion

A young boy awakes one day to find a fairy near him; sent from the Great Deku Tree, Navi the Fairy was to help the child and act as a constant source of aid. Throughout his adventure in Hyrule, Link was always able to rely on Navi to direct him and help warn him of danger. This fairy companion even traveled with him through time, as he sought to protect the land of Hyrule from falling completely into the grip of the evil sorcerer Ganondorf. Navi proved to be an indispensable ally for the hero of time. Just as Link had Navi, we too can have an unfailing companion.

Christ, knowing that his time with his disciples was drawing to an end, taught them how he "will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever." (John 14:16) This other comforter Christ promises his disciples is the Holy Ghost, and as long as we are worthy, the Holy Ghost can be a never failing source of aid in our life.

While on my mission, I received some tragic news about my grandmother; it was discovered that she had cancer. Earlier on the very day I received this news, I was reading in Alma and read Alma 4:15:
"And now it came to pass that Alma, having seen the afflictions of the humble followers of God, and the persecutions which were heaped upon them by the remainder of his people, and seeing all their inequality, began to be very sorrowful; nevertheless the Spirit of the Lord did not fail him."
Alma, being the high priest of the people, was to care for the spiritual welfare of them, so to hear of their suffering was grievous, but yet as the scripture put it the Spirit did not fail him. Whatever we may face in life, the spirit will be there to provide comfort, warn of danger and give guidance. I found this true over the weeks after receiving the news as emails came speaking of the degenerating health of my grandma. Even though I knew there was no stopping the cancer, I had peace and assurance that all will be well for her, the spirit was there to help remind me that families are forever.

As Nephi teaches we need to receive the Spirit, see 2 Nephi 31:13, so that we can have the constant companionship of the comforter. Just as Navi was there for Link, so too will the spirit be there for us.
